Book Review: The Other Woman

The Other Woman by Sandie Jones, is a courtesy advance reader copy of from Minotaur Books. In return, I supplied my unpaid, unbiased review of this book.

When I received The Other Woman by Sandie Jones recently it was like Christmas come early. when a book comes in the mail I typically grin, strut a little, and I rip that package right open. I don’t mind posting a shot to Instagram with appropriate hashtags. It’s a little bit of humble brag. I got a book….Booyah!!

I dove right in to The Other Woman by Sandie Jones. Luckily, I received the ARC right before the NOLA Jazz Fest trip, so The Other Woman is now a well-travelled woman as well. I read on the way over, carried the book into the fest, and finished it up on the way home. In fact, The Other Woman can lay claim to seeing Aerosmith, Sheryl Crow, and CJ Chenier. Lucky Other Woman!

Overview

Emily is a young career woman, finally finding a job where she excels. On the down side, she’s still smarting from the breakup with Tom, made even worse by the fact that she caught the man of her dreams cheating with her best friend Charlotte.  Yep, walked right in on them. Is Charlotte The Other Woman? That’s enough to make her gun-shy on the next relationship, but hesitations soon fade when she meets handsome, successful Adam Banks.

Meeting The Other Woman

The relationship appears to be on track until Adam takes Emily home to meet his mother. Pammie comes across as needy, manipulative, and resentful of the new woman in Adam’s life. Undeterred by Pammie’s cold demeanor, Emily falls for Adam completely. Of course, in his eyes, mum, or Pammie, is perfect, and he doesn’t have any understanding or compassion regarding the rising tension between Emily and Pammie. Now throw Adam’s  equally handsome younger brother James into the mix. James appears to be moving in on Emily as well, and the frustration and confusion continues to mount, ultimately arriving at a wholly unexpected conclusion!

Opinion

This psychological thriller should be required reading for all brides to be. Pammie is exactly what you don’t want in a mother-in-law, and any seething signs your potential significant other’s mum is throwing off are not to be ignored! This book was quite enjoyable, with the unexpected ending making it well worth the time spent reading. My ONE issue is with the amount of crying our Emily does. Not a crier here, so I got a bit peeved with Em. She is in a constant state of eyes welling, tears pooling, snuffling etc, at which some turns I would encourage her to grow some backbone and speak up…or leave!  I wanted to shake her by the shoulders! Her commitment to marrying Adam was definitely driving her actions, even when she felt at the end of her rope.

All in all,The Other Woman by Sandie Jones  is truly a microscopic view of the potential “monster-in-law.” Ah but wait, there’s a twist! Not saying any more, but this was another satisfying story. I’ll definitely be on the look out for the next title by Sandie Jones!

“People who stop you in public to talk about a book, can’t visit a new city without finding a bookstore, and can’t imagine travelling, be it a few miles or a continent without a book or three packed. That’s my tribe, that’s my vibe. If you’re here, I hope it’s yours as well”
